Ofsted hails 'significant progress' for children's services in Leicester

Services for vulnerable children in Leicester have improved significantly since the local authority's children's services department was rated "inadequate" last year, Ofsted has said.

A monitoring visit of Leicester City Council's children's services on 7 and 8 September this year found evidence that the workforce is becoming more stable, while a range of initiatives are ensuring that the professional development of social workers is well supported.

Inspectors said that supervision of social workers is now taking place on a regular basis, and management oversight of work is improving.

Caseloads were found to have reduced, with an average of 18 children allocated to social workers in the children in need teams and 20 in the looked-after children teams.

Inspectors also noted that the working environment for social workers has improved, with more modern office accommodation.
