
Under revised adoption arrangements published today (27 February), the speed at which adoption agencies place children will be the central focus.
Inspectors will also look at evidence that adoption has been considered early in the planning process and not as a last resort.
John Goldup, Ofsted’s deputy chief inspector, said: "Our scrutiny of delays in the adoption process will help focus and bring forward a smooth and quicker adoption process. The earlier children are identified for adoption and placed with a family the better the chances that adoption will be successful."
But the British Association of Social Workers has criticised the inspectorate for failing to identify how councils can speed up adoption processes.
