Cheshire West and Chester, and West Sussex have been added to the list of local authorities ranked as "performing poorly" in Ofsted's annual ratings of children's services.

This brings the total number of councils performing poorly to 14 overall, while annual ratings for three authorities have still not been published.

The inspection uncovered problems with the council’s assessment processes and multi-agency child protection planning, which meant vulnerable children were being left at risk.

Councillor Arthur Harada, executive member for children’s services at Cheshire West and Chester, said: "We are determined to transform what Ofsted recognised as ‘an extremely challenging [local government review] legacy in terms of safeguarding’."
