Acting permanent secretary Hugh Taylor said the Government was no longeron track to halt the rise by 2010. It is the first time that a ministeror official has publicly admitted the target may not be met.
The comments come just weeks after public health minister Caroline Flintsaid that the Department of Health was working with the food industry"to ensure that we stay on track to meet our target".
Taylor made the admission last week under questioning from MPs on thePublic Accounts Committee.
Asked whether Government was on track to meet the target, he responded:"I don't think we can say that confidently at this stage, no. I think wecan say we've made some good progress on some programmes ... We don'tknow if we're going to hit it."
