Nutbrown joins early years professionals' joy over ratios rejection

The author of the government's review of childcare qualifications is among early years professionals to express "relief" and "delight" over the decision to drop child-to-staff ratio reforms.

Professor Cathy Nutbrown carried out the review leading to the government’s More Great Childcare strategy, which contained the controversial proposals. She said she was “pleased and hugely relieved to hear the announcement that the government will not pursue its policy”.

She said reducing the number of adults working with very young children would do “nothing to enhance the quality of early education and care, and would not have reduced costs for parents”.

“This is a very significant step in recognising the importance of getting policy right for young children and their families,” Nutbrown added.

“Many parents, early years practitioners and providers will agree that today's announcement is in the interests of achieving high quality learning and care experiences for young children.

“I hope now the necessary work on improving qualifications for those working in the early years can move forward, to ensure we continue to develop an excellent workforce which is proud of its profession, and which is duly recognised and rewarded for its important work."
