The NDNA’s 2015 Annual Nursery Survey claims that nurseries face a funding shortfall of £809 for every three- and four-year-old receiving 15 hours of free childcare a year.
Similarly, the NDNA claims that government funding for childcare for disadvantaged two-year-olds falls short of the actual cost of delivering a place by £712 per child per year.
The figures show losses for two-year-olds are rising but have dropped for older children - the 2014 NDNA survey showed nurseries lost £604 on average for each two-year-old place provided and £929 for each three- and four-year-old place.
The new research suggests that 85 per cent of nurseries are making a financial loss on places for three- and four-year-olds, while 46 per cent are making a loss on places for two-year-olds.
