Number of children on child protection plans escalates

1 min read Social Care
The number of children subject to a child protection plan increased by 3,600 this year, the latest government statistics have revealed.

According to the Department for Education’s Children In Need Census, there are currently 42,700 children on child protection plans, up from 39,100 last year.

Neglect was the most common reason for putting a child on a protection plan, accounting for 42 per cent of all cases, while emotional and physical abuse accounted for 27 per cent and 13 per cent of cases respectively.

More than 13 per cent of children on child protection plans this year became subject to a plan for the second time or more.

The census also includes statistics for the number of children judged to be "children in need" – which is a lower level of risk than a child protection plan.
