Number of academies doubles under coalition government

1 min read Education
The number of open academies has doubled since the coalition government was formed, according to latest figures released by the Department for Education.

There are now 407 academies open, double the 203 academies that were open in May last year.

Of these new academies, 46 opened this term and 136 were schools converting into academies.

These latest figures come as it emerged that the long-term regulation of academies was still in doubt. The Young People's Learning Agency (YPLA), which monitors and distributes funding for academies, was set to become the principal regulator this month under the Academies Act 2010.

However, the government is now reviewing the regulation of academies as the YPLA is to be axed and replaced with a new body called the Education Funding Agency from April 2012.
