An unannounced inspection of police custody facilities in the county found that staff had received no awareness training in child protection or safeguarding.
Meanwhile, there were no arrangements for vulnerable juveniles to be located anywhere other than in a cell or detention room.
While the report judged the area's custody suites to be "good" overall, it recommended that staff should be trained in providing for the specific needs of juveniles and that appropriate adults, required to be present with young people during interview, should be available without undue delay, including out of hours.
It also calls on Northamptonshire Police to engage with the local authority to ensure the provision of secure beds for juveniles who have been charged, but cannot be bailed to appear in court.
