Statistics, released by the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory (NFJO), reveal details about applications to the new National Deprivation of Liberty Court, which was launched in July to deal with all new cases involving children.

Such orders allow local authorities to place restrictions on vulnerable children’s movements and freedoms.

The report finds that between July and November, 21.4 per cent of applications had been submitted by councils in the North West.

Some 16.9 per cent of applications came from local authorities in London while councils in the North East accounted for just 3.2 per cent of applications.

Overall, a total of 552 children have been subject to deprivation of liberty applications at the national court from 4 July.
