The former boss of Serco's children's services arm has been appointed chair of the National Children's Bureau (NCB)

Elaine Simpson, until recently managing director of Serco education and children's services, will take up the post alongside Claire Tyler, chair of the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass), who has been appointed president of the charity.

Simpson said she had wanted the role at NCB for many years. She said that improving infrastructure at the charity is her top prioroty and that she hopes to support NCB’s chief executive Hilary Emery to consolidate the organisation following restructuring.

“One of the main things is getting the whole to be as great as the sum of its parts,” she explained. “We need to harness the huge strengths of the different parts of the organisation so that those different bits do benefit from being part of NCB, and NCB becomes greater.”
