National wellbeing measure could feature in legislation, hints Education Secretary

A national wellbeing measurement is being considered as part of the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson suggested during the bill’s second reading yesterday.

The topic featured alongside fiery debate around the Conservative party’s calls for an inquiry into grooming gangs, with this amendment being voted down by MPs in Parliament last night.

Phillipson was referring to data on education attainment when Lib Dem science spokesperson Victoria Collins MP raised the topic of mental health.

Collins said: “You talk about a lot of important statistics about how our children are developing, but also their mental health is very important, so would the Secretary of State consider a national wellbeing measurement to help look at those and really look at how we can improve the wellbeing of our children?”
