
Former chief executive of Barnardo’s Martin Narey, who has been appointed as the government’s adoption tsar, set out recommendations to increase the number of adoptions that currently take place in England.
In his report commissioned by The Times newspaper, Narey said government should seriously consider establishing a national adoption agency that takes over responsibility from local authorities, unless there is a step change in the numbers of children adopted and the speed at which those adoptions take place.
Narey also said that information should be published on the number of adoptions finalised and the time taken to complete those adoptions that allows for comparison between local authorities.
