Paul McDowell, currently governor at HMP Brixton, will join Nacro in October taking over from Paul Cavadino who is retiring at the end of the year after eight years in charge.
Matthew Litobarski, chair of Nacro's board of trustees, said McDowell will bring significant experience from the criminal justice sector.
"He has demonstrated strong leadership skills while working in the prison service.
"We are confident that Paul McDowell will continue to build Nacro's reputation and its ability to create a safer society by changing the lives of those at risk of offending."
McDowell has been governor of HMP Brixton since 2006.
During his time there he introduced a radio station into the prison, to help educate and increase skills of prisoners.
He also got prisoners involved in schemes such as Jail Guitar Doors, a charity set up by Billy Bragg, which provides musical instruments to prisoners.
McDowell said: "I will work hard to ensure Nacro continues to grow its well-established reputation by delivering high quality value for money, efficient and effective services designed to assist the resettlement of offenders and to reduce crime."
