MPs to scrutinise youth justice system

1 min read Youth Justice
The effectiveness of the youth justice system will be put under the spotlight in an inquiry launched by the justice select committee.

The inquiry will examine the extent to which the youth justice system in England and Wales is fulfilling its principal aim of preventing offending by young people.

It will assess the ability of youth offending teams and their multi-agency partners to operate effectively in the current economic climate, and will feature early findings from local authorities that are trialling devolved budgets for custody.

It will also examine the evidence base for preventing offending and reducing re-offending, and the extent to which it informs interventions in custody and the community.

The governance of the youth justice system, including the removal of joint responsibility from the former Department for Children, Schools and Families, also falls within the scope of the inquiry.
