More women choose to stay at home because of childcare cuts

Universal childcare must be available to all parents to encourage the take-up of work, a think-tank has warned after latest research revealed that unemployment among women is rising.

Research by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) found that while total unemployment has fallen slightly over the past year, it has risen among women.

The think-tank is now warning that unless more is done to offer financial support for childcare, women will be priced out of the jobs market.

Dalia Ben-Galim, IPPR associate director, said: "During the recession, unemployment among men increased much more than among women. But our analysis of the latest figures shows that this experience is now being reversed.

"Cuts to childcare tax credits mean that for some women, work no longer pays and they are better off staying at home."
