In partnership with youth research agency Dubit, 1,021 young people aged nine to 16 were questioned as part of Baaf's Somebody Else's Child campaign, which aims to raise awareness about private fostering.
Private fostering describes an arrangement where a child is looked after for 28 days or more, by someone who isn't a close relative.
More than 100 young people said they had been privately fostered and of those 42 per cent didn't think anyone outside of the family was told about the arrangement.
While 80 per cent of children felt they were well looked after while being privately fostered, 46 per cent said they had been worried, lonely or sad.
