More than 800m set aside to provide short breaks for disabled children

1 min read Health Social Care
The government is to invest more than 800m in short break provision for disabled children and their families over the next four years, the children's minister has announced.

The cash will support local authorities to fulfil their new statutory duty to offer a range of short breaks services to families, which was instigated by the last government and comes into force in April 2011.

The announcement follows the publication of an evaluation of the short breaks programme, which found that while 88 per cent of families surveyed were benefitting from short breaks, services need to be better targeted, so that all families have access to a wide range of support.

To help improve the way short breaks are provided, the government has also pledged to provide £40m of capital investment next year, which will support innovative local services such as the Hull bicycle project, which provides adapted bicycles for disabled children.
