
A report published by the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) for children found that of 22 police forces that were able to provide comparative data for the period, a total of 1,136 searches were carried out on under-10s.
However, the true figure is likely to be significantly higher as many of the other 21 police forces did not provide data or recorded information differently. For example, the Metropolitan Police was unable to provide data for 2009 to 2013, but revealed that it stopped and searched 136 under-10s – including six children under the age of five – between 2011 and 2013.
