
The YJB is currently responsible for overseeing the youth justice system for children and young people aged 10 to 17.
But speaking in the House of Lords, Liberal Democrat peer Lord McNally said extending the age range to 21 has not been ruled out. However, he said the potential cost of such a move is a major barrier.
Answering a question from fellow Lib Dem peer Lord Dholakia on whether the government has considered extending the remit to see if recent reductions in youth crime could be replicated for those aged up to 21, McNally said the matter is being “kept under review”.
