Mental health experts to advise DfE on teacher wellbeing

A panel of mental health experts will look at ways of helping teachers deal with the pressures of the job, to boost the Department for Education's proposed recruitment and retention strategy.

Professionals including from Mind will work with the department to "look at what government, local authorities and academy trusts can do to promote wellbeing", Education Secretary Damian Hinds told the Association of School and College Leaders' (ASCL) annual conference.

In his speech at Friday's Birmingham conference, he acknowledged as "too long", the length of many teachers' working week.

He told them this is "not good for your quality of life and your families".

As part of the recruitment and retention (R&R) strategy, Hinds said he wants to improve "sad" statistics that show 20 per cent of new teachers leave within two years and 33 per cent within five.
