Low pay and poor perceptions of profession put graduates off career in playwork, SkillsActive study finds

Enticing graduates into a career in playwork is being hindered by poor perceptions of the profession, low pay and lack of career progression, according to research by SkillsActive published yesterday.

The report, which explores how graduates can be deployed within the workforce, recognises the benefit of more professional involvement but says there are a number of barriers to achieving this.

Senior research executive for playwork at SkillsActive Jonathan Parsons said: "The research found the sector isn't against the idea of graduate deployment but things like wages and a lack of courses are getting in the way of this."

A lack of understanding about playwork as a career is cited by respondents as a major obstacle to enticing graduates, with respondents renewing fears that the status of playwork is seen as lower than other professions.
