Low-income families blighted by cost of children's birthday parties

The cost of children's birthday parties is plunging disadvantaged families into financial difficulty, a report has found.

A YouGov poll for the charity Family Action found that 44 per cent of parents in Britain cannot afford to give their child a birthday party, but many low-income families are over-extending themselves financially to do so.

The report found that parents felt compelled to spend an average of more than £100 on a party, fearing that spending less or not having one could “lose friends and create bullies” for their child.

It also found that a fifth of parents (21 per cent) cut back on household expenses to afford their child’s birthday, and over a quarter (27 per cent) go without new clothes for themselves or their children.
