Loughton praises work of west London centre for children in care

Children's minister Tim Loughton has highlighted a west London centre for looked-after children as an example of the type of provision which should be replicated by local authorities across the country.

The Horizons Education and Achievement Centre in Ealing provides both young people in care and those who have recently left care with mentoring, practical support and advice, as well as help with professional training and personal development.

Thanks to such support, the borough’s looked-after children have a strong record of academic achievement with 17 per cent going on to study at university – around three times the national average.

"Horizons is seeing some excellent results," Loughton said. "The numbers of children going on to university in particular is way above average for looked-after children. Other local areas should be learning from centres like Horizon as an example of just what can be achieved for children in their care."
