Addressing a conference on leaving care services, Martin Hazlehurst, manager of the National Care Advisory Service (NCAS), which runs From Care2Work, said the loss of local Connexions teams is restricting careers guidance for care leavers.
As a result, some care leavers are ending up on training courses not appropriate for their needs, he said.
"Lots of leaving care services have now lost the specialist information, advice and guidance and Connexions services that they had access to before," he explained. "This is making a big difference to the careers advice and career planning support that care leavers get."
Hazlehurst added that wider youth services could offer more support to care leavers, if local provision were better coordinated.
