Local authorities to be cut out of childcare funding decisions

Councils will have no say over funding for early education providers in the future, under government plans.

The Department for Education has set out plans to make Ofsted the sole judge of quality in early years settings and the inspectorate's verdicts to become the basis for their decisions about their funding.

The consultation, which follows suggestions laid out in January's More Great Childcare strategy, also suggests that local authorities should not continue to assess the quality of early years provision.
