Chief inspector Christine Gilbert has admitted that different inspectionregimes are overlapping and has pledged to "increase the synergy"between them.
The move is intended to pacify children's services directors who areconcerned that excessive inspections are preventing them fromeffectively delivering the Every Child Matters agenda. But Ofsted hasrefused to bow to pressure from some directors who want to be inspectedagainst the delivery of their council's children and young peopleplan.
The planned changes have not yet been published but are revealed in aletter to local authority chief executives, which has been obtained byChildren Now.
In the letter, Gilbert focuses on annual performance assessments andstates that "much of the analysis undertaken as part of this process isalso done within the joint area review, sometimes only a short whilebefore or after the annual performance assessment has taken place".
