
At a meeting of the council’s constitutional issues committee this week, councillors discussed proposals from an independent report, which suggests that those who rely on family to look after children when they have meetings out of normal working hours should be able to claim an hourly childcare allowance.
Currently councillors are allowed to claim childcare fees if their children are looked after by registered childcare providers, but these often do not offer provision during the evenings.
Councillor Paul Brant, deputy leader of the council, said: "We are committed to making sure we facilitate representation of all parts of society, including young parents who have childcare needs. We are fully aware that council meetings and responsibility of councillors are well outside of normal working hours.
