Lib Dem Conference 2011: Ministers 'close to a decision' on face-to-face careers advice

The government's adviser on access to education has said he is close to getting ministers to agree on guaranteeing a face-to-face careers service for young people.

In a debate at a fringe event at the Liberal Democrat Party Conference, hosted by the British Youth Council, Simon Hughes was grilled by young people who voiced anger at the scrapping of education maintenance allowance, rising tuition fees and the severe reductions in advice and guidance.

One young audience member criticised the gap in provision that had been caused by the closing down of many Connexions services before the introduction of the new all-age careers service. She also voiced concern over the proposal that only online and telephone services will be available to young people.

In reply, Hughes said: "I am hopeful that within a matter of weeks we may get [guaranteed face-to-face advice] as a government position. I hope that the onus from government will deliver, for the first time, a guaranteed face-to-face careers advice for every young person at secondary school."
