Lib Dem Conference 2011: Government to pilot classes for parents of under-fives

Children's minister Sarah Teather has announced that up to four local areas will be involved in a scheme that will offer parenting classes to every parent of a child aged under five.

In a speech addressing the Liberal Democrat Party Conference, Teather also confirmed that the government’s pupil premium will be doubling next year to £1.25bn for the 2012/13 academic year. The premium will eventually be worth £2.5bn in 2014/15.

The government is set to launch a consultation on how councils will decide which children are eligible, with looked-after children and those from families currently eligible for free school meals automatically qualifying. Teather said the consultation will also propose that councils will be free to use the premium money on children with special educational needs or disabilities.

Referring to Unicef’s report published last week, Teather argued that, as well as making improvements to the education system, more support for parents is vital.
