Commenting on the government's full response to Lord Laming's recommendations, the Local Government Association (LGA) welcomed the extra money committed to training social workers, but emphasised the ongoing problems in recruiting and retaining high calibre staff.
LGA chairman Margaret Eaton, said: "We need to ensure social workers are not burdened by red tape and targets. Individual social workers need to have more manageable workloads so they can spend as much time as possible on the frontline protecting vulnerable children.
"What needs to follow is a long-term drive to raise the status and recruitment of social workers for years to come, so that the best and brightest staff are on the frontline protecting vulnerable children."
