The new chair of the Local Government Association's (LGA) children and young people board has set out her priorities for the job in her first interview with the press since taking up the post.

Shireen Ritchie told CYP Now that she plans to lobby government to make sure local authorities have sufficient resources to fulfil new safeguarding duties.

She said: "One of the areas of concern in this downturn is that local authorities are asked to do additional things and the resources don't come with that. The recommendations of Laming are really good important things, which we want to try and achieve, but they have some resource implications."

She added that the Southwark judgement, which was passed in the House of Lords earlier this year, "could have huge resource implications for local authorities".
