It is a fact that 80 per cent of young offenders are abused in childhood. Hardy surprising they feel angry and let down, aggressive with distorted thinking and belief systems.
The expectation on boys starts at a very young age - "boys don't cry", "boys must man up and be strong". Strength itself comes from being gentle, tolerant and kind. We need boys to grow to be healthy protective partners and fathers or we are heading for a train crash.
No policy, procedure or council will in fact help these lads. Intensive and lengthy therapy is the key to digging into the real cause. The distorted thinking through their own childhood abuse creates disruptive, aggressive, macho behaviour, with inappropriate justification of their actions and highly resilient denial of the impact of their crimes (cypnow.co.uk, 15 October).
