
Extended family members and friends will be able to access legal aid following a £6m additional investment by the government.
The funding will provide advice and representation in cases, including legal representation to parents opposing the orders in private law proceedings.
“These cases are often complicated, emotionally charged and challenging for families looking for the best outcome for vulnerable children,” said the MoJ.
Previously legal aid was only available in special guardianship cases where a council was involved in applying to remove a child from their birth parents.
“Providing a stable, loving home for a vulnerable child in need is an utterly selfless act and it is right we provide families with the vital support they need -particularly in the most complex and emotive of cases,” said justice minister Lord Bellamy.
