Leeds says job cuts will not hit frontline children's services

Leeds City Council has insisted that frontline services for children and young people will not be seriously affected by recent job cuts forced upon it by the recession.

The council announced yesterday that around 650 jobs will go over the next year through natural wastage, early retirement, redeployment and posts not being replaced if they are judged to be no longer necessary.

It has been confirmed that none of the jobs affected relate to school-based staff or care for vulnerable children. The council could not give the same guarantee for all children and young people's services, although these are largely expected to remain intact.

"We have done everything we can to protect our frontline services and minimise the impact of the losses on existing staff," said councillor Richard Brett, joint leader of Leeds City Council.
