The proposals were made following a Department for Education review on such settings which ended in March.

Speaking in the House of Commons earlier this week, Labour MP for South Shields and former shadow education secretary Emma Lewell-Buck accused ministers of “legislating to deny children aged 16 and 17, who are in the care of the state, any care at all”.

Feeling disheartened today, thanks to this morning’s committee children in the looked after system aged 16 and 17 will be denied care and legally placed in unregulated and unsafe accommodation. I am sorry and saddened that I was a lone voice but I will keep fighting for you all. pic.twitter.com/AaEfWzneIm
