Integrated care records essential to prevent health system failing children, forum says

A child's NHS number should be used as a "unique identifier", to bring together all heath, education and social care data relating to them, a report by a government-appointed group of experts has said.

The report by the Children and Young People’s Health Outcomes Forum sets out wide-ranging recommendations on how to improve the health system, which it says treats children complacently, despite the fact more under-14s die in England than in the rest of northern or western Europe.

The NHS numbers proposal is one of four recommendations designed to better integrate children’s services, so that families do not have to repeatedly explain their circumstances to different health, education and social care professionals.

“The intention is not to create an enormous ‘big brother’ database, but rather to have a simple way of linking information, on health interventions and their impact, as well as to understand the impact of long-term medical conditions, disability or disadvantage (such as being looked after), or educational attainment,” the report states.
