Inspectors call for SEN improvements in Hartlepool

Health and social care chiefs in Hartlepool have been asked to draft an action plan to address "significant areas of weakness" in their support for children with disabilities and special educational needs (SEN).

A joint inspection by Ofsted and health watchdog the Care Quality Commission, found failings in the way support is promoted among families.

In a letter to Hartlepool Borough Council's children's services director Sally Robinson, the inspection team said: "Many families told inspectors that they do not know how to get the help and support their children need."

Some told the inspection team that "they find the local area's arrangements confusing and, at times, frustrating". Support is also blighted by long waiting times and families told inspectors that "their views are not always heard or valued".

Further concerns raised in the letter, which has also been sent to Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees clinical commissioning group chief officer Ali Wilson, include a lack of analysis of the needs of this vulnerable group of children.
