The joint area review will be replaced with a single performanceframework for local authorities from March 2009,with a shift toproportionate inspection to target authorities most at risk.
Martin Rogers, co-ordinator of the Children's Services Network, welcomed"the approach to performance management, with a move towards a lightertouch inspection regime and fewer automatic inspections."
But John Chowcat, general secretary of the Association of Professionalsin Education and Children's Trusts, stressed the importance ofinspections.
He said: "The acid test will be that Every Child Matters progresses. Thesystem rests on highlighting weaknesses so they can be remedied."
