Inspection reveals Parc YOI falls short on training

A young offender institution (YOI) in Wales that is supposed to offer training opportunities for prisoners is under-resourced and ill-equipped, according to a new report.

The results of an inspection published by HM Inspectorate of Prisons showed that Parc - which is a YOI and an adult prison - in Bridgend was not "resourced well enough to carry out its role as effectively a training prison for Wales".

The report added that, although there had been some improvement in the quality of education and work, the YOI has only 70 education places for 1,200 prisoners, and only 289 work places. It said some of the workplaces were in workshops with "too few opportunities" to gain work-related skills.

Chief inspector Anne Owers said that, while there had been improvements at Parc, there were "two key weaknesses" that needed to be addressed.
