Positive Futures, the government's activity programme for young people in disadvantaged communities, has announced an increase in the number of participants who have become volunteers or secured a job.

Latest figures for the project show a 29 per cent increase in those who took up volunteering roles between 2007 and 2008. The figures also show a 36 per cent increase in those who gained a job through Positive Futures.

Those who gained a qualification, such as an NVQ or sports award through the scheme also increased between 2007 and 2008, from 5,876 to 9,677.

The figures have been revealed in Positive Future's annual review Working for Us.

Positive Futures is run by the charity Catch 22 on behalf of the Home Office.

Home Office minister Alan Campbell said the scheme was crucial to diverting young people away from crime, drug abuse and antisocial behaviour.
