'Inadequate' council to close one in five children's centres

1 min read Early Years Social Care
The number of children's centres at a council rated "inadequate" by Ofsted will be cut by more than a fifth, with those remaining being run by schools in the future, as part of plans to save more than £1.6m by 2020.

Manchester City Council plans to save £180,000 in 2019/20 by ending Sure Start services at eight centres, leaving 30 remaining in the city - a reduction of 21.1 per cent.

The remaining 30 will be organised into 12 groups of children's centres, with responsibility for provision being handed to local schools.

The council plans for schools and community organisations to use the eight decommissioned children's centre premises for alternative use for children and young people in the future.

A report on the proposals said the changes would "see no reduction in the scale of the outreach workforce", and could come into force as early as April 2018.
