In the new edition of CYP Now: Call for overhaul of youth custody workforce

1 min read
There needs to be a fundamental overhaul of the quality of staffing in youth custody in light of the abuse allegations at Medway Secure Training Centre, youth justice campaigners have said.

In the 19 January edition of CYP Now magazine, Carolyne Willow, director of charity Article 39, said it is a “travesty” that young people held in youth custody are not looked after by staff that have specialist qualifications of meeting the needs of vulnerable children.

So far, five men have been arrested by Kent Police investigating abuse and mistreatment allegations at Medway STC, prompting Willow to call for youth custody settings to employ a range of qualified staff specialising in different areas including health, education and psychology.

The analysis article also looks in-depth at how current funding for custody places could be used differently, why the inspection system failed to identify problems at Medway, and whether the alleged abuse reflects issues with the use of restraint against young people.

Other analyses in the latest edition include how pressure is growing for the development of an England-wide system for supporting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children that enter the UK in Kent; and a look at the measures councils are taking to prepare for a 3.9 per cent fall in funding to their public health budgets from 2016.

In addition, former DCS and now chief executive of a group of academy schools Clive Webster explains why academies and not councils are best placed to tackle the attainment gap and improve the education of vulnerable children.

The main feature offers advice on how to best demonstrate the effectiveness and value for money early intervention services deliver.
