day and someone who is suffering from depression? Would you know what to
say to someone who appears to have a mental health problem or where to
seek help?
Many people don't, yet early intervention is the key to supporting people with mental health problems and their families.
4Children is calling for children's centres to be at the centre of a shift towards a prevention rather than cure strategy by helping to tackle the underlying issues of family crisis including mental health issues.
By offering support at an early stage to prevent problems escalating and taking a holistic approach, children's centres can begin to reduce the tens of billions of pounds spent annually in dealing with family crises after they occur.
Children with mental health problems should not be treated in psychiatric wards designed for adults. A new approach is needed both to change the way we support families' health and to help children to cope with pressures they are facing so they do not develop mental illness.
