In Focus - Childminder agencies

It is widely acknowledged that childminders have a key role to play in meeting the childcare challenge, with considerable potential to grow both the workforce and the market. This opportunity has been recognised by the government, which believes that the creation of childminder agencies can support this objective. In pursuance of this they have introduced legislation to facilitate this in the Children and Families Bill currently before parliament.

The government's vision is that childminder agencies will be a "one-stop-shop" helping childminders with training, business support and matching childminders with vacancies to parents looking for childcare. The proposition is that agencies will be able to deliver an innovative service that is tailored to the needs of parents by, for example, offering combined nursery and childminder packages.
