Hospitals identify hundreds of FGM victims in a single month

More than 450 new cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) were identified by hospitals in a single month, statistics have revealed.

Figures collated by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) show that 467 female patients treated at acute NHS hospital trusts in England in September were newly identified as having been victims of FGM.

A total of 1,279 female patients who had previously been identified as a victim of FGM were also treated during the month.

Hospitals already have to record the number of patients they treat who have been subjected to FGM, but it is the first time they have had to send the figures to the HSCIC.

It is hoped that collecting the statistics will eventually help to gauge the true scale of FGM in the UK.
