Hospital youth work project set for expansion

A hospital-based youth work service that helps young people affected by violent and gang-related crime is set to be expanded to a second London emergency department.

Redthread Youth, which won the Youth Work and Children and Young People’s Charity Awards at last week’s CYP Now Awards 2013, hopes to establish a service at the North West London Major Trauma Centre based at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, by the middle of next year.

The charity wants the new service to be piloted for three years and be accessible for all those aged under 25. It is in the process of finalising how it will be funded and staffed, with detailed preparations set to begin in January.

A meeting between key staff from Redthread, St Mary’s and community agencies took place in October to discuss how the new project will operate and how referral pathways for young people into local services could work.
