HMI Prisons launches Covid-19 inspection guidelines for YOIs

New guidance has been released on routine inspections of young offender institutions (YOIs) as part of the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

HM Inspectorate of Prisons said its adapted inspection approach came after the World Health Organisation classified prisons and other places of detention as “unusually high-risk environments” during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The inspectorate said its revised guidance would still allow independent scrutiny of secure settings while adhering to a "do no harm” principle, meaning detainees, staff and inspectors would not be put at unreasonable risk.

Three YOISCookham Wood, Wetherby and Parc – have already been inspected this week under the new measures that focus on a limited number of key areas, it said.
