
HM Inspectorate of Prisons said its adapted inspection approach came after the World Health Organisation classified prisons and other places of detention as “unusually high-risk environments” during the Covid-19 outbreak.
The inspectorate said its revised guidance would still allow independent scrutiny of secure settings while adhering to a "do no harm” principle, meaning detainees, staff and inspectors would not be put at unreasonable risk.
Three YOIS – Cookham Wood, Wetherby and Parc – have already been inspected this week under the new measures that focus on a limited number of key areas, it said.
