Health visitor body warns of widespread service cuts

Health visiting services in many parts of England are being eroded due to funding cuts by councils, an influential sector body has warned.

The Institute of Health Visiting (IHV) said it has been contacted by members across the country in recent months raising concerns about reductions in health visiting services and budgets.

Its comments follows news that council leaders in Suffolk are considering plans to slash its health visitor workforce by 25 per cent to save £1 million.

A statement from the institute said: "The situation in Suffolk is by no means unique.

"We have sufficient information from our members to confirm that the model of health visiting cuts that we are seeing in Suffolk is being, and has been, replicated in various forms in a significant number of other local authorities in England."
