Health News: Community health - GP commissioning pilot put on hold

1 min read
Early attempts to get GPs to commission children's services have ground to a halt because of public mistrust about the reconfiguration of children's wards.

Ten Government pilots launched last year are examining howpractice-based commissioning will work to meet children's health needs. But one of the more advanced pilots, run by Telford and Wrekin PrimaryCare Trust, has been forced to put work on hold.

The pilot is encouraging GPs to run consultant-led paediatric clinics toreduce hospital admissions of children with minor ailments such asconstipation, nausea and headaches.

Fran Beck, director of children's services at the primary care trust'said the pilot would result in children being seen earlier in a morefamiliar environment that is closer to home. She added that it also hasthe potential to save between a third and a half of the cost oftraditional referrals.
